There is one glimmer of hope for mod makers who were hoping to make at least a partial living from their creations. Buried in his Reddit session, Newell confirms "We are adding a pay what you want button where the mod author can set the starting amount wherever they want." This includes zero, so free mods won't be going anywhere. There isn't any sign of a date on this "donate" button but it's good to know there will still be avenue for players to reward creators in future, in a way that won't involve, as Newell so elegantly says, pissing off the internet.

I wonder how they will set split this time.

Well we can give it a go but it will most likely got change anything.......its just rewording......mods authors will just stick the price from paid as the starting amount and we will be doing this all again. As long as its not blocking users from mods and gives them the option not to pay anything without penalty it will be fine.

Still start preparing for the second shitstorm.......

My wishful best idea would be to set it like it is in humble bundle, you(donator) decide where cash go.

I buy loads of Humble Bundle even if its just one game I buy the entire bundle for it. Why? Because its going to charity, its going to a good cause and I can choose to send 100% of it there and nothing to a greedy corporations pocket. Who face it are not going to miss the money when they make 100,000 if not millions a day.

  2. I just wonder though, like teams like SkyUI, what will they do now? Are they going stop working on SkyUI now?

Shame some of the modders who supported this got all of the hate and will now forever be remembered for supporting a failed project.

It's their choice to quit modding, no one is forcing them. You do know SkyUI hadn't been updated in like coming on a year prior to all this right?

SkyUI last Nexus update was 15:42, 9 June 2014.....

Im not sorry they bring this on them selfs not thinking straight there own fault.

But i´m not suddenly stop using SkyUi because of this.

As a company Bethesda make great games, mod makers make mods which bring new users to them. This is something they clearly forgot when they tried this.

  3.

And about refunds, don't make me laugh. Do you still believe that they do it in good faith?

    http://www.nextpowerup.com/news/19314/valve-effectively-gets-rid-of-eu-steam-refunds/

Well it the UK you have 14 days to return a product even if you have already used it when it comes to digital content. In order for Valve to trade in the EU it has to obey EU law. Valve's statement would never hold up.

  4. Does Not Malukah already work for bethesda? she did a few songs for ESO.

As far as I know: No

She was asked to do Beauty of Dawn, a fan song, which she did. Most soundtracks are normally done by artists contracted to do them.

Like a building company who has been hired to build something. After it is done they go separate ways until needed again.

You can read about it here.

    http://www.malukah.com/tag/bethesda/

That sounded rather naughty, you realize that, right? :PPPP

    Now that you mention it........yes

However I wouldn't object to her giving me royalties.

  5. OK, just found this on the Workshop! :D

Oh Gaben has come to own all modder's hearts.

I tell you, I tell you, the paid mods come.

With the bullshitting power of ancient scam art.

Believe, believe, the paid mods come.

It's the end to the era of passion at heart.

Beware, beware, the paids mods come.

For the freebies have passed, and Capitalism grows.

You'll know, you'll know, the paid mods have come!

  6. Let me ask you this; If Ashal posted that he could not afford to keep the Loverslab running for more than the next 12 months would anybody here buy a membership?

I would, this site gives me the freedom to mod whatever I want without stupid rules and bullshit. Out of all the modding sites I have got the most help her with any issue.

I think you would be surprised at the number of us who would. I think some kind of free vs premium membership model would work. People who are willing to pay to support the board could have a few privileges, and those who don't or can't could still have access to most board features and/or mods.

Well this has been talked about before. You could originally donate to the site but the feature seems to have disappeared. If I remember right the community did offer to donate money for a need server update and to cut Ashal costs down.

As far as what the future holds for modding, adult and otherwise... I think when the dust settles it will be somewhere in between the old free system and a paid system, with modders who want to get paid for their efforts offering updates to backers first, and then releasing free versions to the public later on.

And really, would that be such a bad system? Those who are against the paid model will only have to wait a bit, and the mod will likely have been bugtested by the paying crowd by then.

Bad system? No. Would it be done this way, Debatable.

  7. I found this in the comment of the SkyUi page written by someone called seventonblade

"They won't even be able to buy a cheeseburger. All that measly 25% that modders make goes into the modmaker's Steam wallet, and that's on top of their mods being ripped from their ownership, which means Valve can basically issue a DMCA takedown to the Nexus if, say, SkyUI v5.0 were uploaded here at the same time as on the Workshop, even if by schlangster himself.

This can only spell absolute doom if the trend continues and grows, and I have no respect for schlangster if he continues to support this system that is both legally and ethically bankrupt."

If this is true, then all those modders just threw themselves right into Hell.

Oh look who has locked the comment section of SkyUI?

Well newsflash Dante.........its going to be happening a load more me thinks.

  8.

    Was to be expected.

    snip

Arthmoor signed up for the paid mod scheme? I am surprised. He may be a grumpy bastard, but he's always had his principles.

Then again, if Chesko's opt-out letter is anything to go by, I think the initial sign-ups for the scheme were played. I mean Chesko initially though he was getting 75% and it wasn't until just before the scheme went live that Valve clarified that particular point. Then there was the $400 threshold. Now it transpires that the $400 limit resets every month. I think this was a con job from the word go.

That's my objection to the whole thing really. That and the divisive effect on the community as a whole. I don't think anyone here would begrudge mod creators making a few pennies from their hard work, but this isn't the way to go about it.

Of course it was played. You don't have a major launch without guests, Vavle and Bethseda have most likely been working on this for months. You sign your mod up, they launch and you get screwed.
