  1. I don't know about any programs that would help, if anything is recoverable you will need something like this

    Hard drive dock

I've had a lot of success recovering data with these sort of tools, so they're generally worth the money.

Although From the sounds of things, I wouldn't count on recovering much data, it sounds like your HD has had a critical falure

    anyway good luck! :P

no, but corrupted memory blocks can make sections of your harddrive appear blank.

I've had this exact issue with HD myself.

You'll never know that if you format the drive without figuring out the actual problem.

True, but if you format the drive, the issue is almost certainly dealt with...

If it isn't then you know the root of the problem is the hardware :b

Also change your router password, and network ports just to be safe.

Its what I would do anyway  :P   I'm running round in circles now, so I'm gonna stop ;)

yea, but if you format your drive and the issue persists you know its a hardware issue...

Your hardware doesn't delete specific files on your harddrive.

no, but corrupted memory blocks can make sections of your harddrive appear blank.

The problem could be his HD slowly dying, although maybe your right it is weird that full folders would go blank, and not even a warning would pop up.

  4. Formatting the drive before figuring out what's going on would be stupid. You may format your drive and re-install everything, only to find out the same thing is happening again.

Install PeerBlock or another software that displays connection attempts. Then disconnect the PC from Internet and look for outgoing connection attempts to unknown IP addresses, which might prove that you have a malware in your PC.

yea, but if you format your drive and the issue persists you know its a hardware issue...

By password protected log on do you mean just the normal setup of having to enter your password when you log on to the Windows account on startup?

He means that you should use a password for your Windows account, preferably not "abc" or "123".

Is there anything else missing in your harddisk other than Steam game files? Because a virus is unlikely to prefer game files to actual OS files. It could be one of those ransomware or some other type of malware.

If it's just the Steam game files, then a hack attempt is more likely IMO.

sorry I just think of something, for what Password protection?

you must this password with your keyboard enter. but even Google has access to everything. it is a light these passwords to spy out!

    chrome://settings/content

If it is a virus the damage could be limited to just software, and hardware.

If Its a hack, it could be much further reaching... cookies could have been downloaded, passwords stolen, emails accessed, worse still they could have your bank details.  Obviously thats a worse case scenario, it could just be some kid having some fun.

But still start making some precautions, format that drive dude, better safe than sorry.

  6. Lol I watched it yesterday, I really enjoyed it too :b

Antman as a whole is a silly concept, but the film was really well done.

As long as your realize its not meant to be a super serious film when you start watching, you will enjoy it :)

  7. Thanks for the feedback everyone, I made the big leap and bought it.  I have a gaming desktop so the laptop will be for less demanding games and using Photoshop and Blender; sometimes I don't feel like being in front of a desktop and would like a change.

Try to do some research on this particular laptop, but google-fu is weak, I can't find anything on a Lenovo Y70 with the exact specs.

    @Userper

Will do, but it'll be plugged-in most of the time and I never had problems with the batteries from past laptops.

    @Blabba

When I have the funds I plan on swapping the hybrid drive with full ssd.

    EDIT

Does anyone know of a good crapware remover like Revo Uninstaller or just stick with Revo?

Most display models have battery issues due to the amount of time they're left on, believe me it makes it worse if its plugged in all the time.  I personally use CCleaner, Managed to get down to 6 startup services :)

  8. I would like to get this laptop, but out of curiosity would like some feedback from the more knowledgeable members.

    Lenovo Y70

    Win 8.1

    i7 2.6GHz

    16GB DDR3L

    Geforce GTX 960M - 4GB dedicated memory

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-17-3-touch-screen-laptop-intel-core-i7-16gb-memory-1tb-8gb-hybrid-hard-drive-black/6339015.p?id=1219661389849&skuId=6339015

I can get one for $1000.00 (USD) because it's the last one they have and it's the display model.  Btw, I have a desktop for some of the more games.

It sounds a little pricey to me, although Lenovo is a good brand.  If its a display model, do yourself a favour and check how much a replacment battery is first, you know just in case :)

The deep web is a term used by the media to demonize websites that can't be accessed by search engines, like the guys above said.

Its also applied to websites like LL...

Because content out of the norm is also categorised as being part of the "Deep web" i.e. modding, porn( lol ), alternate media, hell even torrents classify, believe me its just another media buzz word used to justify censorship and surveillance.

LL is not deep web or need TOR for it you can find just by google it it's not censored at all maybe these days in England but not in Netherlands we have 100% free net neutrality even by law?

LL is maybe demonized by some idiots but it's therefore not a deep web site hehe.

    :s  I live in England... anyway :P

TTIP is likely to be implimented soon, so I would enjoy your Net neutrality while it lasts.  Most European nations are signed on to it.

edit: Lol I was drunk when I wrote that first post, I hope you guys don't take it too seriously :P

Yeh i know it maybe won't last for long net neutrality for now netherlands is one few countrys in the world that have the best net neutrality in the world by law.

But for long where small country and europe is hacking on our doorsteps to get rid of net neutrality :(

No i don't take much serieus on the internet don't worrie ;)

TOR for me for many reason is no go zone. Plus even tho TOR is so called deep web and your untracable the spy organisations NSA or others still can track you down plus your target nomatter what even if you don't do ilegal stuff there.

On normal web there still ways hide your tracking movements to limit and hide your IP no need for TOR plus don't need to go there nothing for me on TOR i need.

Never store vital information on your hard disks plus don't use cloud storage ever. Don't register on any social network and your rather safe for what it's worth.

Yep to everything you just said :b

TOR doesn't work that well anymore, as long as you have an ISP you can be traced on the tintwebs.

Everything you do on the internet goes through them, so they simply have to look at your online traffic to see what your doing.  ISP's have the encription keys for most source encription out there, so thats out the window too :dodgy:, you know unless you make your own encription. (not that hard)

As most of you will know if your ISP can see what your doing, the gov can, so the best way to stop them peeking on you is to not draw their attention.

Go of the grid back to basics as we know before internet :D

Im thinking of this and with new windows 10 im step closer to give up whole internet and its bullshit spying.

Windows 10(i predict worse ever window version released to date soon) data mining to extreme by MS and WU forced even drivers(they can install whatever they want if you like it or not) which are not security(security i understand and thats good its forced but not rest) related no option at all if you want them or not :( .

Lol I wish I could go off the grid, my profession essentially means I never can though.

Lol how can Microsoft fix all the issues Vista caused with windows 7, then recreate all of those said issues with window 8

BTW I've got the beta of WIndows 10... worse ever windows version doesn't cover it.

I used it for 2 days then reverted back to win 7, it constantly ignores Admin Priv, and kept changing all my files to read only... even my documents... the OS is acts like virus in short.  Plus the GUI is awful, maybe not as bad as windows 8 but still pretty bad.

If your that put off by windows, switch to Linux, I run GRUB for dual-boot, lol, its nice to switch when windows is annoying me :)
