  dumb question I know, but sometimes even the best miss the simple things.  Not questioning your ability or anything but you followed these steps?   If so, then did something get mis-spelled when you replaced the textures?   Does the mesh match the 32 slot? (i.e have you tried any other armors like a default vanilla instead to try replication?)   Is your current body match the armor set you wish to replace the defaul one with?

Did you use something like NMM to install or did you do it manually? I did it manually since it looked like they way the files were set up it wouldn't install right with a manager program.

I had a similer problem that was related to a bloated save.  I was able to fix it by using the "Clearinvalidregistrations" consol command.  It wasnt an instant fix but after entering it several times over the course of about an hour or 2 of gameplay I had lost my game freezing and load screen issues.      Try that and see if it helps =)
