Crashing More than Usual

Okay, this is really confusing. I cannot travel the area between Kvatch and Anvil without the game crashing. I have no clue why, considering it worked fine before. One day I installed Elsweyr and Valenwood, and everything seemed to be working fine. Then I installed a few mods adding clothes to the game, and that's when shit went down. I couldn't get anywhere in that area without the game crashing. I uninstalled Elsweyr and Valenwood, and still problems. Then I uninstalled a certain armor added through a mod, which helped a bit, but not much. Even after trying to uninstall Unique Landscapes, no luck (so I just reinstalled em).

I'm sure it's one of the clothing mods... I added a number of them the day I started having problems.

Pyffi and TES4Edit have done wonders for the stability of my game.

First off have you used boss to sort your load order? It doesn't appear at first glance that you have.

Second with that many mods you really need to have a bashed patch using Wrye Bash. There are written and video walk throughs on using Wrye so don't panic.

Lastly your lovers mods are also all out of order (boss won't do very well putting them in the proper place - so you'll have to do it by hand - just see the Lovers PK Quick install guide for load order help: http://www.loverslab.com/showthread.php?tid=30

This might have something to do with my bashed patch.

When rebuilding the patch, which am I supposed to check in this situation?

Couple of things:

1. Uncheck all lovers esp\esm's before you rebuild your bashed patch (which means you might have to rebuild it yet again - but before you do see point 2).

2. Move your bashed patch all the way down to the bottom (up as high as you have it - it is being overwritten).

3. Move LoversIdleAnimsPriority.esp & LoversAnimObjectsPriority.esp just below your bashed patch (which now should be at the bottom).

Follow the above three items and see if you can get things rolling. If you still have problems then holler.

As to what to check when you rebuild your bashed patch - as you click on the boxes on the left you will see mergable items to include or select on the right - choose what makes sense (there will be other items like zero weight and such that you probably don't want - default is off so no worries).

Though I am getting a somewhat better framerate, so I think we're making progress.

Ok, lets work on your load order a bit more.

1st - go to this link: http://www.loverslab.com/showthread.php?tid=3 there is a text file at the bottom of the first post for lovers load order. Download or save it and use it as a guide. Also note per the load order guide that xeosp may need to be after your bashed patch (maybe even after your loversidle if you have googly eyes).

2nd - have you used Boss on your load order? If so great, if not - do it and then follow the load order recommendations from the guide you downloaded above.

This should greatly improve stability (note you will still get a few crashes with that many mods no matter what you do due to Oblivion being well........oblivion!) However I have a few more mods installed than you and I am running quite well. Hang in there and we'll figure this thing out.

First, I configured the load order according to that document (with a few necessary changes). That didn't work. However, I started trying the first of the two mentioned methods. To get closure on my suspicions, I disabled all of the clothing mods I remembered installing on that day. I was right; one of the clothing mods was causing problems. The problem might be load order related, but I'm going to disable a number of them, since I don't really care for some of them. As of now, not only is my game fixed, but it's better than ever; it's smoother, more stable, and even visually improved. Not only have you helped in the repair of my game, you have helped improve it and taught me a few ways to fix up Oblivion when I'm having issues. Thank you very much.

As to the clothing mods - as you become more familiar with the CS you can pull things out of them and add\replace them into mods you have. Myself I never use the clothing esp's as I look through the meshes for stuff I just can't live without and put them in my game via the CS.

Same here. I hate having to look all over Cyrodiil to get a new outfit, so I've created an armory with all the outfits I've downloaded over time. I also manually check everything I install with Nifskope. More than half the stuff you download is so poorly optimised a game developer would start crying if they saw it.

another advisable thing would be to run boss and clean the esps it says to clean, here is how to clean stuff:

there are mods that SHOULDN'T be cleaned but i can't really see any you are running that shouldn't be cleaned.

well i don't think lover mods should be cleaned, it might break them

There are three things I'm mainly worried about here:

1. Where should Knights.esp go?

2. Where should I put additional weapons/armor/etcitems?

3. Are the Unique Landscapes good where they are, or should they be up higher?

1. put knights up with the rest of the official dlc (under shivering isles would be fine).

2. Additional armor/weapons should go somewhere above your lovers mods.

3. Only move Unique landscapes if you experience landscape tears. If all is fine then leave it where it is. Also as you add mods they can also cause landscape tears as many mod authors do not clean their mods. Keep this in mind if you notice a landscape tear after installing a new clothing/armor mod (or any mod for that matter).

If you don't want to use Boss to resort your load order (understandable as it sucks ordering your lovers mods) just follow the above but ideally it is best to use Boss to place things correctly.

Also don't forget that every time you alter your load order you need to do two things:

1. Make a clean save (uncheck every mod you "moved" in OBMM, boot up, save and exit) then reselect your mods again.

2. Don't forget to redo your bashed patch! (reminder - uncheck your lovers mods prior to building your bashed patch as they should not be in it).

If you don't clean save the errors carry right over via your save game and..............CTD!!

As to Game Companion not working? Wow....I am not sure as this is the first time I have heard of anyone not being able to use it. Very strange.

Could be missing meshes/textures.....

You might fire up Wrye and check your save games to see if there are any conflicts.

Also take a look through everthing in TES4Edit to see if there are major conflicts listed there.

Lastly, if you can't figure out anything through these then you are down to the most painful and next to last step (last step being new installation):

1. Uncheck all mods and make a clean save.

2. Slowly add in a couple of mods at a time until you start experiencing crashes.

Personally before going to this extreme I would try removing the bulk of your clothing mods to see if they might be effecting things.

Now I've got bigger problems.

After doing the painful process of adding mods in, I quickly realized that Unique Landscapes was giving me hell (though probably not all of it). So I decided to reinstall it. First I tried deactivating the OMOD and starting up the game without it but with all of my other mods. Now I can't play the game at all. When I select Load and load my save, it loads partially and then just exits out of the game.

I tried to reinstall Unique Landscapes just now, but OBMM won't finish the installation. Instead I'm going to try the BAIN installation method, if I can figure out how to do it.

In Wrye Bash, the checkboxes under Saves are all red. So major conflicts are probably the reason why I can't load. Hopefully this will be fixed when I reinstall Unique Landscapes.

EDIT: After finally getting Unique Landscapes to reinstall, I'm still not able to get the game to load. I have two saves with orange checkboxes, but that's nothing new. The game only loads halfway, then exits automatically - no "this program had a problem" box or anything. Now I can't even play my game anymore. Please tell me I can fix this without completely reinstalling the whole goddamn thing.

Okay, this is weird, but I ran the uninstallation on disc (without deleting anything) and just reinstalled the game and the Shivering Isles/Knights of the Nine DLC, reinstalled OBSE, ran Archive Invalidation, rebuilt the Bashed Patch, and... it's working? It appears I am now able to traverse the highlands at least a bit (haven't gone too far, but seems to be working). I'm not having any problems as of yet, except that my character's pants are suddenly missing... damn fine steel armor, always glitching... but hey, at least that's sexy.

So, uh, I guess I'm good for now, until the next problem inevitably pops up. Thanks for staying with me through all of this, gregathit. I really appreciate your help.

One final word of advice - Back your entire game directory up.

Once a month or so (depending on if I am adding/removing mods) I make a complete copy of my oblivion folder. This way if I add a mod (or mods) and I break my game I don't have a nightmare on my hands trying to figure out what was deleted or changed.

To save disk space you can compress the backup if you like as the entire game directory can get quite large (I have over 110,000 files and 40+ gigs in my oblivion folder).
