Quad Core win 7

I do not believe that Oblivion is taking advantage of my Quad core systems CPU.

I can find no way to set the affinity while playing the game.

standard way is to load Oblivion let it get to the main loading screen, and alt tab to desk top or start the system manager, go to the process , right click it and set its affinity to use all CPU.

My problem is that when I start the system manager, Oblivion stops working, and sense it is locked up, I can not set the affinity..

This makes it impossible for me to set the affinity...:( Affinity's must be set each time you use a program, However I do have a program that would allow me to set it to My preference once, and then it will automatically set the affinity from then on.

My problem is I can not get it set the first time, because Oblivion crashes when I go to desk top.

anyone know how to get around this ??

The above link is to a program called game companion at the nexus. It runs the game in a windowed mode (thus avoiding any alt tab crashes/freezing) and improves stability (at least it has for me and many others).

Try this

It's called Fake Fullscreen Mode Windowed - Alt Tab Fix

Works great for me.

HanPL and Galat: Both programs are made by the same person. The one I linked to is his latest version (he also gave it a new title).

correct me if im wrong but isnt there a tweak in the Oblivion.ini file so that your oblivion uses your pc's power to the max? including using all the cores available

edit

off topic note: AMD release the first 8-core CPU...in Japan.

According to Tweakguide, to set the Gamebro engine to use Multicore

Tweak the ini to this

Multithreading Tweaks:

bUseThreadedBlood=1

bUseThreadedMorpher=1

bUseThreadedTempEffects=1

bUseThreadedParticleSystem=1

bUseMultiThreadedTrees=1

bUseMultiThreadedFaceGen=1

iNumHavokThreads=5

iThreads=9

iOpenMPLevel=10

I bet a Overclocked i7 is still better, for gaming anyway. 8 Cores would destroy for rendering though.

To be honest everyone, the only fix I can really say that works is what HanPL and gregathit linked. Oblivion is NOT a multi-core capable engine despite what everyone says and a poorly designed engine at that I might add. Only the console versions are capable of true-multithreading as this is built in their configs.

I'd say you're better off either overclocking the CPU or getting a CPU that's better in single thread such as the i7 2500K.

here was the last thing i read in the tweakOblivion file..

Here: http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html

***************************************************

Update: In recent times many people have written to me and/or have also posted around the Internet that the tweaks in the [Memory' date= Loading & Multithreading Variables] section of this guide are either useless or harmful. I have clearly noted from day one that that these tweaks may have no impact, and having tested them myself to ensure that they aren't harmful, I mention that you can experiment with them if you wish, and reset them if you run into any problems. The reason they are still listed here is for the sake of completeness, so I don't receive hundreds of emails telling me that my guide is 'incomplete' because I don't cover these famous tweaks.

***************************************************

for the most part, I believe they don't work, or work for perhaps certain CPU duo core, but I would like to know for sure. and I just think my quad core should be doing much better than it is..some times My fps is terrible.

I just don't think the Game using the CPU to its max potential.

And yes i have already done those tweaks.

I just would like some way to check while playing that the CPU id being used to its Nth potential.

Could hook up a secondary monitor and a program suitable for cpu monitoring,or the task manager, even if that one isn´t optimal it can give some info.

As cpu monitoring software goes,there is a crapload of those,just pick any.

The easiest way (though not direct, is to get a program which monitors CPU, and have it log your CPU use. Like its been said above search around for CPU monitoring software your bound to find one that keeps a history/log.

Have gotten some result's with the last 2, but Had some trouble remembering commands for dos 6 to get around in the command line interface.. But thanks to the Help command, I worked my way through this.

The game buddy thing, sort of work's, but the command to minimize does the same thing, as when I drop out of full screen mode.. Oblivion stops running, and then you can not set affinity.

But thank you all for the helpful suggestions.

Seems like a like a work for this game. I used a few tweaks here and there, but I don't really notice a difference. Maybe it's just me, but windows seem to spread the load out pretty evenly, and with a quad, you should be fine.

It all depends on how much of a power user you are......high rez textures and a butt load of mods can stress the hell out of the best system!!!

A 2GHz dual core would be better than a 2Ghz mono core, not because Oblivion uses 2 cores, but because the strain is divided between Oblivion taking one core, and windows programs taking the other.

Honestly, this is impossible to make a game originally made to run on one core a multi-threaded game, because this has to be designed carefully before everything else, as a badly done multi-threaded game could be worse than it's mono-threaded counterpart!

(And btw, that's the biggest reason why the game is slowing down even in heavy configurations...)

I only hope Skyrim will be multi-threaded!

All that I have read, points skyrin to be very into the multi-threaded, and take full advantage of quad core system's.

I just hope I am able to play it, with out to much frame rate drop. less than a Month away now I think, if I understood the information I read correctly.

I really do hope that they do build into skyrim the ability to multi-thread and not dumb the whole thing down for consoles!!!!

Just under a month is correct........for now anyway........game delays are almost a regular feature anymore! Let's hope they actually hit the release date (11-11-11) all the while NOT having a massive amount of game breaking bugs!!

I know, I know, I really am asking for a lot....but it will be close enough to Christmas to maybe get my wish.........

I never touch a game until at least its second major patch. Ok it would be nice to have at least one game that takes full advantage my current monster rig. That aside, I shall still bide my time.

(quivering and muttering: must NOT send pictures to Robin...must NOT...We promised we wouldn't....we PROMISED.....Yes precious....we promised.....)

Skyrim is a console port sadly so as far as Multithreading....I hope, but Bethesda could pull an EA and just release a patch later which allows it. This would be annoying but this IS Bethesda we are talking about.

Have you looked into Oblivion Stutter Remover? Specifically, the heap replacement features. It doesn't make Oblivion truly multithreaded, but it does make it more multithreaded.
