Looking for PC game recording software.

I have a Youtube channel I'm doing very little with, and I decided one fun thing to do would be to record game sessions.

 

I've heard some negative things about Fraps and FPS loss, and have been looking into Bandicam, which I like as I can recorda target o nthe screen, so I can do in browser games without getting the whole screen, and it can record voice, though I think I need a better mic.

 

Bandicam pretty much does what I want it to though I heard there might be better programs out there, and if I can avoid having to edit in a voice track separately all the better, as well as being able to target a flash game for recording.

 

In any case, I guess I'm asking for suggestions on this. Bandicam is currently my fav but I want to know of more options, especially if any of them are less expensive or even better, free to use.

I have to disagree Fraps is doing a great job with no performance lost , only problem is how big the files turn up to be .

Just use Fraps, it works great. Like Veta I get no performance lose. You only get performance loss if your computer is not powerful enough to handle it and if it's not able to handle recording software then you shouldn't be playing computer games on it.

Run the video through FormatFactory, it's free and does a good job. I took a 3GB MP4 file told the program to convert it to MP4 again and it was compressed down to 252 MB with no loss in quality in any way.

As long as you know the format as well as the bitrate that you want your video files to have then fraps is awesome. Anything above 30fps should be good so give it a try, and use a hdd that has a lot of space. After each play session you can convert them and won't run out of space.

 

As Ark suggested above ^ formatfactory is a free converter and is very easy to use so make use of it, or you can just drop the files as they are into sony vegas and re-render it that way, it will reduce the file size too.

While I've never used Bandicam, I used fraps myself for a few years until Action! by Mirilis came out. It has game/desktop recording/voice recording as well as a way to record a portion of your screen (and allows you to take screenshots as well. One major feature that won me over is that you can PAUSE between recordings, which fraps does not do, and helps cut down on file size. It does seem to record 720 HD footage with smaller file sizes then with FRAPS. Make sure you have plenty of storage space if you take a lot of footage. The files work in Sony Vegas, but won't play in VLC. It's 30 dollars (uses paypal) compared to 39 dollars for fraps.

 

Both work well, imo. And, both have free trials too.

Fraps is very good I use it myself but it "eats " tons of GB even for few min of gameplay.

If you have a lot of free space use Fraps + VirtualDub to compress the format.

Action! by Mirilis sounds impressive , although the main reason I use fraps is because it can record anything including youtube videos .

Virtual Dub a very genius converter, thought i was the only one using it. Lol

Handbrake is the best program I have found for reducing the size of fraps videos whilst keeping the highest resolution. Virtual Dub is also very good but Handbrake has the edge IMO.

it might be to late for this. but once i saw a thing that you pugged into a video output on your tv/pc (mirror screen mode), then ran it into a box, then back to your pc/another pc where the recording software was. it seemed like definite way to record games/movies/tv shows without any pc performance loss. and having the software running on a separate computer than what you were gaming on would even further help with that. i'll have to do more research on that because now i've gotten myself interested in doing that again.
