Eh, I don't know. My problem with the Lovers mods is that the rape is more like silly hentai rape than anything else. It's not really "dark" if you ask me, just a bit silly. I don't play games for laughing. But that's just my taste, I guess. Underneath the shiny graphics and the often stupid glitches Oblivion is a serious game. The Dark Brotherhood questline for example is darker than anything the Lovers mods have to offer.

That's why the goofy hentai rape doesn't fit. And roleplaying a goofy character experiencing goofy sexual adventures is not something that fits into a serious environment, imo.

Let's not forget that it's laughably easy to avoid rape in TES4. Even FCOM on highest settings is too easy compared to some games out there.

The only things that could be challenging are escort quests, but there are ways to get around them.

There are mods pretty much like the ones you're looking for. Just not Lovers mods. FCOM includes a Free the Slaves plot, and so does the Claudia's Little Secret - Sexy Maid of Chorrol tie in. The CLS-SMoC tie in free the slaves plot is very good, and can be played seriously. I listed a bunch of romance mods earlier, all featuring companions with their own quests and schedules. Vilja includes a sequence where you save a dog and he becomes your friend.

The Dark Brotherhood quest is my favorite of the vanilla Oblivion quests, and in a serious play through of Oblivion I don't use Lovers mods. I'd say Dark Bloodlines is the only one that really fits in a Grim & Gritty play through.
