Is it me or are the UV tools in 3DS Max garbage?

No matter what I always end up with stretching and pinching that can only be fixed by manually moving vertices in the UV map. The relax tool can fix problem areas but tends to ruin adjacent areas at the same time. It is particularly annoying when two sides of a seam are slightly different size because it is blatantly obvious when a texture is applied. So if anyone on this board uses 3DS max, could you share what techniques you use to get the best results when unwrapping?
