Possible Windows Problem. SERIOUS.

For a few days I have been unable to open any archives with 7z or NNM or installers. I need to renew my antivirus software, but it's so new I'll have to download an installer for fresh software. Any solutions come to light about this?

 

Update: I managed to add files from archives to NMM by adding mods from file, but some of them won't work (NMM says they can't be added), and I tried installing MO, but it said none of the files could be opened for writing; I chose to skip every file to coplete the process, and, predictably, MO didn't install.

 

Update: It seems as though only certain files that are associated with Skyrim, or the Nexus are affected by this problem; .rar and some 7z files seem to work fine with NMM's "add mod from file" function. The problem files are listed below by associated links.

Sounds like it might be a hard drive problem, run chkdsk and see what comes up.

did you update 7zip/rar   to the last version   it might be because of that

 

second are you the administrator   when instaling any software it needs to be installed as administrator windows 7   i do not know for 8

You find chkdsk through the start menu type it into the search bar and the chkdsk.exe should pop up.

You can find it under the properties/tools menu for your harddrive, right-click context menu.

I was able to install the latest 7z alpha. No I forgot about opening things as the administrator because I don't use that option, and most things install easily.

 

As it turns out, the new 7z thing doesn't even show up all of the time when I right click on an archive.

chkdsk opens, then closes immediately.

 

The disk defragment is stuck at 4%.

Start looking for a new hard drive, that one's failing.

So I bought some antivirus software from Walmart because I figured I would be able to install it from the disk. I was right. I seems to be slower than other antivirus software, but maybe it's reading the files more thoroughly.

I guess, at this point, since I broke Skyrim again, I'll just try an OS installation to see if I can fix these difficulties. See you guys late over night or sometime tomorrow night.

 

Update: I managed to fix Skyrim, I'll hold off on the OS installation until a later time.

The only antivirus software you need on Windows is MSE. Anything else is a performance robbing ripoff, plain and simple.

If you're so screwed up you can't download and run the MSE installer, start off with Housecall to get things in order.

If it's failing hardware, no AV software is going to help, and you should be busy making backups of your important stuff rather than playing games. DiskCheckup will run some tests and also check the SMART predictive failure stuff on your HDD to let you know if that's the problem. Could also be a failing power supply.

And yes, HDD can fail given enough conditions to generate multiple faults.

AVG is practically a virus in and of itself. It likes to insert itself into everything. I'd avoid that at all costs. And Avast just sits there doing nearly nothing (I've gotten infections while using it).

 

MSE works (great for me) without hogging resources. And having Malwarebytes around as a "second opinion" scan is a very good idea.

The performance of MSE and it's unobtrusiveness coupled with the fact that it does very well at detecting established threats (it's not as good at the 0day stuff) more than makes up for it's lesser heuristic engine. If you're the type of person that runs around sticking your eWang in every internet glory hole you find -- you frankly deserve what you get.
