Steam's Error Problem.

Hey, guys, I'm having an issue with steam. Every time I try to activate it, it gives me this error message "Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again."

I've been trying for hours to fixing this problem.  The message in itself is confusing to me seeing as how I obviously have a network connection. I tried un-installing  and re-installing. I've tried restarting my computer. I've deleting the ClientRegistry file. My firewall is set to ALLOW steam. Yet nothing works. I don't know what else is there to do. Please, if someone can help me before I pull out my hair then I'd be grateful. I just want to play skyrim.

Delete all the files in the steam folder except the following:

Steam.exe

Backups Folder << If you have one

Steamapps

userdata << Back this up and then remove it

Then run the Steam.exe to rebuild Steam.

If that does not work you will need to contact Steam Support and get them to check it. It sounds like to me its a server connection issue. Your connection is fine if you can connect to here without issues.

I couldn't connect to Steam yesterday either. Now it works fine again, so I suppose it was a problem on their side.

Do you remember the error message you got? This is ridiculous. I paid for games that I can't play now. I've tried everything I could but nothing is working. Nothing major changed on my end. I even restored my pc to a point where steam WAS working but still nothing changed. I guess I have no choice but to contact them and wait for a solution.

Are you sure you pressing the go online for steam ?? the one for offline is very close to it. It works fine on my end.

Maybe you have something in the background blocking connection for steam to go on-line.

I wish it were that simple but I've tried deactivating everything I have in the background and yet the problem persists. I don't know about this "go online" feature so I'm assuming it's inside of the steam page itself. I'm using the same steam icon I've used since I registered.

This happens to me quite often, usually on a Monday or Tuesday.     It is very misleading, as the error is worded to indicate that there is a problem with your connection, but it is usually a problem on their end, or somewhere in between.     When it happens, nothing I do seems to fix it.     But it usually clears up in a couple hours though.

You should be able to run Steam in offline mode, and still play Skyrim, though, until it gets fixed.

Just to clarify,  at the top of your client page (on Steam), on your menu choices, click Steam, and the second option down, says "go offline".      Click that, OR, when it gives you that error about not connecting, it also has an option to continue, in offline mode.     Either way, you should be able to run Steam in offline mode, and still play any of your games.  It will let you run it "offline" and play any game you have, as long as you have already downloaded and installed it.

It won't let me run it at all. Every time I try to get into it by executing the icon, it tries to update and then the error message appears. There is no option to play offline. It won't even let me get into the main page. After I uninstalled and reinstalled it, I'm unable to go any further than the error message.

What operating system are you using ?? if it is windows 7 are you loading steam in administrative mode ??

if you did all that then i have no idea what to say. Steam itself should never give you that much problem unless you have installed in program_files and have windows 7 and higher. in that case UAC could be the only culprit i can still think off.

Also open your internet browser and try to visit steam web page can you view it normally ??

Actually the UAC issue started during Vista, but even then, it was super easy to fix.  Sure, UAC is great if you're worried about hackers or viruses and whatnot, but if you're smart enough to avoid cesspool sites where such things can crop up in mass, and are always careful to avoid running files you aren't sure you trust(and if you must, can do so safely), then UAC is useless, just like most "virus protection" software.

As a reminder, your first and best line of defense against such things is yourself.  If you know what you're doing and are able to figure out what should be trusted and what shouldn't, all you need is a way to clean up your computer in case something gets through(or if you ran a file you didn't trust completely).

I am using OS windows 7 64bit and yes I am using administrative mode.  I just got a reply back from steam and all they're doing is regurgitating the same response I get from other people. It's getting to the point where I'm about to say $%@# it and give up. I've tried just about everything I've thought of, been recommended to and advised to and yet nothing seems to help. I've been searching for a solution since sunday and it's frustrating as hell. I've even turned off my firewalls like most have suggested and it still doesn't work :(

Don't get me wrong, I'm still extremely grateful for the advise you guys have given me. I'm just exhausted from searching for fixes hours on end. I feel like I can throw $50 at someone so that they can fix it for me :).

Maybe it will be better to just show a quick screenshot of steam. And what the error really is. hit printscreen on your keyboard so it capture the full steam application in action. Maybe then we can really see what to problem is.

Did you check steam FAQ list ??

There seem to be allot of problems that could interfere when steam are concerned check the list if you have anything like that activated in the back ground that could prevent steam from updating online.

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7333-UAXB-2919

Something is preventing your steam application from accessing the internet. if it is not firewall could be anti virus etc..

you do not need to turn off fire wall you just have to tell it to allow steam from using the internet, not sure who told you that but who ever it was he needs to be fired.

if you are using an all in one package like Kaspersky internet security it has a build in fire wall + antivrus also, you need to tell it to allow steam to access internet.

So it is better to check what you have installed on your pc and start from there. What is certain is what ever you have on your pc is preventing steam from going on-line, so it has no idea what to do and then pops that error.

Hm... Did you recently get a new router? Reset your router? A router has it's own seperate firewall, and mine realllly hates it when I try to host a game online. I even tried port forewarding, to no avail. You may just have to try removing your router and directly wiring to your modem. Try that and see what happens.

If all of the files in your Steam folder is there and not corrupted, try moving the Steam folder to a different location, maybe your root folder (C:\) then launch Steam.exe from within the Steam folder.

Also, are you having Steam launch at Windows startup?  If so, it could be Steam trying to connect before you can establish a network connection.

I just got this message.       It did not give me any chance to run it offline, like it usually does, it did what you said and just gave the message and closed.

I waited a few minutes, and tried again, and it ran fine.      I've no idea.

Did you say if you had an antivirus?  Sometimes mine will not run until I disable the antivirus and try, and then I find out there is some type of update its wanting to do, and the antivirus was stopping it.

Also two good ideas to try in the posts right above me.

Sorry, guys that I'm late in responding. I go to school part-time and work full-time so It's difficult to find the spare time. I will try to answer your questions as best as I could.

"If all of the files in your Steam folder is there and not corrupted, try moving the Steam folder to a different location, maybe your root folder (C:\) then launch Steam.exe from within the Steam folder." All of the files are there, I even deleted them all and re downloaded a copy of the steam folder from the internet. A site where other people have had success with the copied files. Also, my steam is located in the (C:\).

"Hm... Did you recently get a new router? Reset your router? A router has it's own separate firewall" Nope, no new router. Still the same one I had since I got the computer. It's actually a modem. It doubles as a router I guess as it can also send out wifi. Out of curiosity , how do I turn off any firewall it may have.

"Something is preventing your steam application from accessing the internet. if it is not firewall could be anti virus etc..." Steam is currently set to be allowed on my firewall.I never messed with it since the first day I installed steam. Also as for my anti virus. Apparently I haven't installed one yet, lol. Just got the computer a week ago.  "Maybe it will be better to just show a quick screenshot of steam. And what the error really is. hit printscreen on your keyboard so it capture the full steam application in action. Maybe then we can really see what to problem is." I tried that option on my computer but nothing happened. I'm not exactly sure if it did take a screenshot and where it ended up.

"Its a steam problem i could also not connect yesterday so waited yes it sucks and STEAM SUCKS" I'm beginning to feel the same way :\

I'm beginning to consider restoring my computer to the factory settings. It's a fairly brand new computer as I've only owned it for little over a week. I'm not sure if this option will work but I'm desperate at this point. I hate running away from a problem I can't solve because even if it does work, what's to say it won't happen again? And if it does, I won't have a simple solution for it. What do you guys think? Should I do it?

Try logging into your router/modem thingy. Open your web browser, and in the URL bar type in 192.168.2.1   If this does not work, try any variation of 0,1,2 as the last 2 digits until you get to your router/modem management page. Get a good look around and see what you can do. If it asks for a password, and you've never put one in, leave it blank and hit enter.

When did it happen ?? if you know the date you could try system restore from before that day it started to acting up, and see if that clears anything for you.

Other then that i have no idea how to help you any further. other then tell you to reinstall windows.

Hello, beautiful people! Wonderful news!! I have finally gotten steam to work. I didn't want to do a factory reset so I just went ahead and deleted every program I installed since I got the computer. It was easier this way seeing as I've only had it less than two weeks and I didn't have much on it yet. Apparently there WAS something blocking the activation but I had no idea what it was. I uninstalled EVERYTHING and tried the steam installation  once again. To my surprise, it started up and went all the way through to the main page. I still don't know what caused the error specifically but I will be careful from now on with what I download.

Thank you all for sticking with me through this and offering your advise. HAPPY GAMING!

I could probably isolate what exactly happened with your inability to connect to Steam, just by looking at a list of the programs that were installed at the time. Some programs will take over the necessary ports needed by Steam, from all the posts I read here and your replies, I am fairly certain this is what happened to you. I am glad you were able to get it going again.

Kind Regards,

CaryWinton

Thank you for your advise. I wished I could have screenshot the programs I had installed before I deleted them so you could have pinpointed the cause. I don't know which one was blocking steam but I'm happy to say it's been smooth sailing since I did it. I hope this thread help someone who is in a similar situation as mines.

This issue is most often caused by third party applications interferring with Steam.

Please uninstall any applications listed in our Programs Which May Interfere with Steam FAQ before following the instructions provided below.

Please exit Steam and browse to your Steam installation folder(see below for default locations for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).

Delete all of the files in this folder except:

  • - \Steamapps\ folder
  • - Steam.exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo)

Restart your computer.

Then, launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut.

With Steam running, re-test the original issue.

If the issue persists, make sure your network is optimized for Steam: Troubleshooting Network Connectivity. Please follow all suggestions in this article, even if your network appears to be functioning correctly.
