Video card troubles

30 posts in this topic

So been having this problem for a few weeks now where my videos and games stutter like crazy. I clean install thedrivers and everything is great, but as soon as I restart my PC it does it again. Any clue what might be causing this?

Nvidia 550ti with newest drivers. Also tried older ones but got the same result. Any help would be greatly appreciated so my woman can watch her hulu XP and I can game on!

Have you tried installing an older card to see if it happens again? Do you think it could be your monitor, have you tried using a different one? Is it only on videos and 3D games, or anything you're doing on the computer? How old is the card? Are you overclocking it? Have you cleaned out your case lately? Tried removing and reinstalling your current card after a good cleaning? Checked all your cables? Are any of your cables bad or worn? Have you reset your graphics options to default and rebooted? Do you have current and effective malware detecting and removing software, and cleaned out your temp files?

Sorry for the barrage of questions. No need to answer them, just ideas for you to consider.

Don't have am older card, wires are good, case is clean, cables are good, antivirus is good, temps are on auto delete, default still has probs, don't overclock. Haven't tried taking the card out and putting it back in though. I can't believe it works fine until I restart hmmmmm.

So just to be 100% clear on exactly what it is doing.

You reinstall the drivers and can play the games for hours and no problems?

But every time you restart your computer it stutters and has issues until you do a reinstall of the same drivers, correct?

Next time you try to install the drivers, try and do a clean install of the drivers. To do that choose custom install when installing the drivers and select the clean option. Or it will say something to that effect. What it does is it completely removes all of the driver parts before installing the new one.

My best guess is some fragment is being left behind and getting trigger on reboots. But it is only a guess, doing a clean install though hopefully would fix that problem. With any luck that will be your problem and it will fix it.

And do this clean install in safemode always best.

It is possible that Windows is doing this to you. I have seen this before, when Windows sees the driver is not a WHQL (Windows Hardware Qualified List) driver it will replace it with one that is, this is usually what happens after a recent Windows Update or in your case a reboot. If you have another PCI-E Slot in your computer, I would try moving the video card to that slot, this will change the IRQ for the card and in essance "Fool" Windows into thinking it is new or different.

I use for years alpha/beta drivers for AMD and never EVER it was replaced by windows even hacked drivers if that is what you mean by not being WHQL?

OK single slot and will try to disable the driver auto installs.

Ok so dumb fix. After trying all weekend to figure it out I said to myself...

self?

yes?

the problem is only when you reboot right?

yes?

msconfig?

Had three unknowns my security didn't pick up. Stopped them and there you go. :)

Well it is good you got it fixed but a bit troubling you have unknowns.

Almost all nVidia cards of the 400 / 500 series with Fermi GPU architecture have the problem of stuttering. A few driver versions before the problem was even that the whole PC just froze instantly, only turning it off and on again helped, until the freeze took place again in a few minutes. The intervals got shorter and shorter.

Nvidia claims they have fixed that bug with the latest drivers, which they have not. They just "mildened" it. The PC "only" stutters indiscriminately and seemingly for no good reason.

Customers of course go through the roof since months! The last fully working nVidia driver for these cards was 314.22, which is almost a year old. I'm still using it, works well with Skyrim. If you don't play games that explicitly need a newer driver, I strongly suggest you install that one, but in all cases clean all video driver residue from your machine.

This thread in the nVidia forums here:

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/621899/geforce-drivers/desktop-internet-browser-freeze-thread-w-geforce-460-560-gpus-updated-for-nb-12-5-13-page79-/

goes further into detail.

It's a mess.

Took me 3 weeks to find out about that. Before that I changed each and every piece inside of my PC, and the error couldn't be nailed down. Until I stumbled upon above mentioned thread.

Next card will be AMD / ATI, that's for sure.

There is no need for this nvidia solution(in my opinion bullshit solution by nvidia what crooks they are(bad drivers are bad drivers(well intended to help ratrace don't get me wrong) but use the removal tool form Guru3D and your problems solved removing everything from older drivers, it's simply the best.

Use driver that are stable or buy AMD as you suggested(AMD have also sometimes bad driver problems its not exclusive to one brand) :P

Absolutely.

There is no need for this nvidia solution

To clarify: I didn't link to the thread for any solution (especially not the nVidia "soution" to turn off dynamic power management in the drivers) but to deliver proof that the Fermi architecture bug and nVidias rejecting to code drivers that work well in combination with Fermi graphic cards actually does exist. So the thread opener can stop bug chasing if his card is actually one of the above mentioned. I spent three weeks going nuts and pulling my hair searching for the culprit in my PC, and I build / setup PCs since Win98. I do not want that to happen to others if I can help avoiding it.

How in their right mind can a company get away with THAT? Forcing the principle of planned obsolescence onto their customers by coding crappy drivers and neglecting their customers complaints? It's nothing else imho - yes, they are doing drivers for older cards, but older cards are no gaming cards anyway but used for office purposes, so if they would provide this kind of customers with non working legacy drivers they would just move on, and they wouldn't buy an expensive card - it's the gaming people that they try to force their crap upon because that's the people that spend money.  The 400 / 500 cards are still lower middle class and in no way trash candidates.

My friend has a GTX 550 and never had a problem with it

Although he is buying my GTX 660 and i am buying a GTX 770 because AMD GPUs are shit
And whenever AMD updates drivers it's a manhunt for some god damn changelogs while nVidia releases a PDF with known issues and fixes

Did i not advice saying nvidia sucks and then you should go for AMD?

Learn to read.

No i did not advice for his nvidia card with at same time spread hate and you must buy AMD.

Then i also told that AMD also have sometimes troubled drivers this is not exclusive to nvidia alone...did you miss that?.

I adviced as suggestion buy a AMD with smile i don't see any harm in that.

You just cursed and HATE with a passion that AMD sucks which i never did with Nvidia.

Thats difference between you me, you prolly never even have owned a AMD, if your saying AMD GPU sucks which is not even close to truth, thats very clear to me you don't know nothing about AMD only from other haters and hypers.

Now stop your hate and give some instructive advice in stead spreading hate towards AMD.

Thank you.

Did I miss something? Perhaps I'm too old and don't get it, but is there a AMD / nVidia war going on in general or is it just here? If the latter is the case, it's hopefully not my fault, for all I wanted to do is point the thread opener to the nVidia Fermi prob. It clearly exists, it's not a flame bait, I have experienced that myself. Weeks of troubleshooting for nothing is really something I wanted to avoiud for others, that's why I posted that.

People, come on. Are you as emotional when it comes to your vacuum cleaner? Your washing machine? Your kitchen gear? AMD and nVidia are COMPANIES and only care for you as a consumer. They have no emotional bonds whatsoever to you as people. And sure as hell they wouldn't invest as much emotional energy into fighting for you as you do for fighting for some shitty graphics adapters. For curcuit boards with some electronical parts on them. That'll soon be tossed in the garbage.

Companies are not your wife, your kids, your medical supply, your house, your whatnot.

For him to be a satire, there have to be real people like that in the first place.

Every 2 years, I change GPU's, and I don't care what make I use, whether it is AMD or Nvidia.

If it gets the job done well, then that's good enough for me.
