Video card issue (Black screen on start up) (Solved)

My PC had a Geforce 640 which ran most game fine at 25 fps but i wanted more.

So i went and bought myself a GTX 760 videocard and a stonger PSU (520 Watt).

After i installed it my pc wouldn't boot up and gave me 1 long beep and 2 short beeps.

After searching the web i found that my videocard is most likely the cause.

This is my first time installing new hardware on my PC and i sure i did something wrong.

Are there things that people always do wrong when installing a video card, which i most likely also did and did one of you have the same issue?

This is no longer the case.

Now i just get the medion logo and the ability to start the boot options screen.

But what ever i do i only get a black screen.

P.S. my monitor doesn't say no signal, it's just a black screen.

Please help :(.

Make sure your video card is correctly connected to the two power supply extra connectors, the PCIE port won't gave enough power, also 520W is OK if your PSU is of decent quality (80+ bronze minimum).

Also make sure that the amps per 12+ rail is enough for the graphic you are using. The age of the power supply also matters as a power supply get older ( or hotter) the amount of power it puts out decreases.

Also make sure that it's a PCI-X 2 card going into a PCI-X 2 slot, PCI-X 3 is NOT backward compatible with PCI-X 2. You may also need to upgrade your motherboard bios, just an FYI. It might help to know who made your motherboard, is it off-the-shelf or a homebrewed machine? That way we can track down the exact problem via the post codes your machine is giving?

a PCI-X 2 slot, PCI-X 3 is NOT backward compatible with PCI-X 2.

Tell that to my computer. :D. GTX 670. ( PCI X-3 ) in an AMD 990fx ( PCI x 2).

However it is entirely possible that the:

Actual slot is bad. = need motherboard or live with what you have

You might need to enter the BIOS and set that up to be able to properly use the new graphics card. BIOS settings got out of wack. Especially possible if you have another graphic port on the motherboard ( not the dedicated graphic card. )

I bet if you put the old equipment into the computer again it will work ( graphic and old power supply. ) If it does. You have a 50/50 choice. Bad Graphic or Bad Power supply / not powerful enough.

I stand somewhat corrected Ritual, since if I remember right, it depends on the mobo.

There are alot of factors that go into compatibility. Now even if you can put a x3 into an x2 there are some slowdowns when we are talking about the more powerful cards. not sure where that happens but I hear the 780s are a good place to be concerned. Most current cards ( mainstream) ones aren't powerful enough to fully use the bandwidth of the x2.

Also placing two cards in many mobos cause the normal x16 slots to become x8 slots and can add to some bottle necks and mircostudders. My current board (990FX ) has two x16 slots ( full slots no downgrade) however they are x2 speed. Now if you want a headache. The current x16 x3 slots on many of the intel mobo will downgrade to x8 x 8.. Which is the same speed  as both of mine going at x16 as the improvement in generation is roughly double. So in essence my motherboard x2 pci x slots are equivalent to x8 slot on a newer pci x 3 Mobo. ;)

However as stated above. If placed into a newer mobo I will have a very hard time noticing any improvement as my current card isn't stressing or exceeding the current bandwidth. That is the reason many AMD ( which all are PCI 16 2.0 slots) are able to handle most of the current graphic cards ( which the current newest lineup are PCI x16 3.0 grapic cards) With space to spare. They work very well in these older AMD boards because they aren't exceeding the bandwidth of the slot. ( creating studders and such)

One can have some fun providing they have a 770 or 290x by placing it into a computer with a mobo with a PCI x16 1.0 slot. They then turn up the graphics and add some heavy mods and watch the studders and other strange graphic and texture issues. Even my current GTX 670 don't work right on an older 775 mobo with PCI x16 1.0 slots. It causes all sorts of problems when the old 4870 works just fine despite it being greatly inferior in power.

Bottom line .. for the Op is the equipment used be it Processor / mobo/ power or graphics need to be matched up closely in both power and needed resources and one can easily build a cheaper computer that is both very stable and very effective at playing games, rendering video and such without any slowdowns or studders. And most importantly less money wasted.

OH you are correct .. The OP if still in trouble with this should give the listing of the current computer parts. Memory, Mobo, Powersupply, graphic card hell even the case if possible. This can help cross reference the issues and even check hardware and such.

BIOS/CMOS beeps usually indicate the card is not seated properly in the slot. Be careful to make sure the small clip at the end of the slot is "open" before trying to insert the card, placing the card in the slot with a slight angle with one end going in a bit ahead of the other should ensure a good fit and the clip should close easily with little force or effort. The notch or slot in the card should also help with lining it up in the slot properly.

I will try to check back and see how you are doing.

Kind Regards,

UPDATE:

Ok, i just found out that when i plug in the HMDI cable he does boot.

But (there is always a but) it shows the "Medion" screen for about 3 seconds and when he's done loading, no signal.

The difference is that this time i plugged the HMDI cable directly in the videocard, instead of a vga on the mobo.

This might be my stupid mistake because my pc doesn't have a onboard.

But still i get no image after the boot sequence.

P.S. Thanks for all the help :D

I think my old 560 TI nvidia is broken but my mother board is only pci E express 2 and now if have noticed the stores only sell good PCI express 3 for budget prices but will an express 3 also work on an express 2 motherboard ?? or am i forced to first buy a new motherboard ??

Actually PCI-E 3.0 cards are completely compatible with PCI-E 2.1 and 2.0 slots. Only if youre using a very highend gpu you might see difference in performance, other than that it will still work all the same. Not exactly sure if thats what you meant with "PCI-X 2/3" tho :P

"X" as in eXpress, the same way some people use X to shorten Christmas. I prefer the official name to be clear.
