Blender: creating multiple curved objects

Any of you guys know a nice way to do this?

Here's the thing

I'm messing a bit trying to create hair

For that I need to extend objects and curve them

I'm also making an experiment for a Medusa hair

Thing is I read this tutorial on creating belts

It spoke of the curve, the curve modifier and the array modifier

Basically it copies an object along a curved line

Problem is, the curve is too messy to work with... It's OK for belts and necklaces, but when the spirals get more complex, weird shit starts to happen

It twists in weird ways so the continuity is lost and that pic is just an example of things done trying hard not to mess it up.

But it can get a lot worse
