Crashes with CS

As the title says, I was doing some modifications to some NPCs for a mod (if you want to know, it's Tantrivaylia) and it constantly crashes whenever I try saving. So I look around and some people suggested to convert the esp to esm and modify. Backed up the esp and converted to esm and still the same problem.

More looking and some people suggested loading only just a max of two mods. But I've done more than two mods master for Vilya so I was wondering, should I reinstall CS and just go for broke or am I doing something wrong that's blatantly obvious?

Hi, both those suggestions are complete red herrings.

What O/S are you using and where did you install Oblivion?

If you are using Vista/Windows 7, NEVER install anything except microsoft software in program files. Unless you are careful, software in program files will often not have write permissions, to 'save you from yourself'.

After all, it's Bill's computer, not yours! (grin).

Not unless you have tes construction extender installed. if you have not it should have been the other way around, tes don't allow you to edit esm directly, any change you make will save esp instead.

What are you trying to save is it scripts ?? if so make sure you load tes with obse active.

@ Symon, Windows 7 and I installed Oblivion and all of my games on a separate HDD anyway. And I didn't know those were wrong. :P

@ Donkey, I don't have the script extender on but I was just using the mod's NPCs. I'm not changing the scripts but modifying their looks and as well as some of the idles as it was getting stuck on certain points. And how do you load with OBSE active as a side question as I thought OBSE was enabled on default?  ???

no not unless you tell it to.

make a shortcut to obse.exe and place this in the shortcut.

\"C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\obse_loader.exe\" -editor \"

-editor will make sure obse is loaded with the editor.

C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\

This is just the regular install directory for oblivion, if you have it somewhere else make sure it directed there instead.

Okay, I think I got it right now. Hopefully it won't crash now... >>

EDIT: GOD DAMN MOTHER*@#&%#(%(@#^%^(

There goes my work again. :(

So basically, I want to modify the NPC looks and I loaded only the XeoSP and the RC esm. Made Tantrivayla a master and did it. But when it comes to save, instant CTD. :(

Make sure the NPC is previewed in the render window before making an edits.  I had this issue, too while editing NPCs.  You need to preview everytime before doing anything.  It cut down on crashing dramatically, not saying it is perfect, however.

@ J-Dragon, I made sure of this for every single NPC. The problem comes when I want to save the darn file. If I set my active file, it doesn't set the changes to it. And if I don't have an active file, it doesn't allow me to save.  >:(

I have to admit that CS is probably the worst set of modding tools when it chucks a bitch. >:(

That is VERY strange. If you don't have the Tantrivaylia file set as the active file, it should save all your changes to another ESP...not crash.

Finally got it work. Practically had to uninstall it and reinstall it. Loaded up the file and did the changes. Went back into the game and it was saved. Man, 4 hours of mucking about and getting zero results was a PitA quite literally.

Awesome! Is it possible we can see a screenshot of your work/success?

I love Tantrivaylia and welcome seeing any mods to it.

[/quote']You can install programs there just fine.  But(always a but and maybe a few more butts), you need to disable the UAC, or setup a special security policy for any programs there which is just more trouble then it's worth.

Indeed you can. I've just found that it's a lot easier for someone who doesn't do this for a living (as I do) to just install anywhere else. That way they don't get adjusting the UAC and security policy wrong.

Sure. I'll upload some screenshots when I've got the time as I'm still working my attentions on other mods that need some beauty changes... :P

Hey now. What's a few hours of a screwed security policy between friends, and a wide open internet.  :o
