Followers will not have any dialogue after I dismiss them

I hired a vanilla follower and everything worked out normally. We raided a dungeon, killed some undead and left. All commands work normally (as far as I know). However, when we got back at the Inn I had originally hired him on, I dismissed him (tried both through EFF's follower wheel and the vanilla dialogue).

 

I wanted to check out whether he was going to charge me again if I wanted to rehire him and right after tried to start conversation with him. Activating him did nothing; he merely opens his lips for a second and goes about his business. No dialogue whatsoever.

 

What I have tried:

 

- Reloading a previous save and dismissing again

- Reloading the save

- Rebooting the game

- Doing 'resurrect' on him through the console

- Disabling and then enabling him

- Going outside, waiting for a few hours and then trying to talk to him again

 

Dialogue with other people work normally.

Ok, so I managed to SOMEWHAT fix it. I still want people to try and help me.

 

What I did was dismiss the follower and wait 24h. Dialogue started working normally again with the exception that the "Hire" dialogue option has simply disappeared. The "Perhaps another time" dialogue still shows up, though.

Well, I have no idea what's causing this, but I have found a way to go around it. EFF has an option to forcefully recruit someone. It also has an option to purge the system and fix an actor but neither seemed to do anything. At least I can re-hire him normally now.
