Consistent Crash after 40 minutes... SOLUTION FOUND!!

Greetings,

I'm sure you have read somewhere on this forum about my issues with playing Oblivion and it crashing after 40-60 minutes of playing. Well, I discovered the cause of my problems this past saturday.

AVAST 5

After reimaging my oblivion install from a backup on my win7 computer I still had the save crash issues from before. This backup was from before my issues started and technically, nothing should have changed with my install. So I got to thinking. What has changes since I created this backup a month ago....I got a copy of AVAST 5 Antivirus and upgraded to it.

So...I decided to disable all of the scanning and antivirus services that AVAST 5 provides and start the game.

Not only did the game run without any stuttering or weird savegame errors, IT DIDN'T CRASH!!! I played for 3 hours straight before I forced myself to save and shut the game down. I then re-enabled all of my disabled mods (texture mods, npc mods, companion mods, clothing mods, OSR, OBGE2, etc) and started the game again and continued from my last save.

NO CRASHES AFTER 2 HOURS OF PLAYING!! (Though it did lag a little in-towns but still 20 fps...acceptable)

I never would have initially thought that my antivirus was causing so many problems with my game. I lost out on a few savegames due to file corruption and my last savegame before reimaging was completely unplayable as it crashed 10 seconds into the game.

So on Sunday evening I tested it again, disabling my AV and unplugging from my router. Started the game...played for 4 hours...no crashes (Exiting the game once to use the bathroom in that timeframe).

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I can now ALT-TAB without the game locking up as long as I don't do it longer than a 30 seconds (so far).

You cannot BELIEVE how happy I am... ;D ;D

I always make sure, that whatever antivirus I'm running, I ALWAYS exclude my Games directory, less interference that way.

My game runs even better when I completely disable the AVAST 5.

Of course, I disconnect from the router/switch before I do.

Usually firewalls and anti-virus programs causes issues when running games. I usually point my anti-virus to be idle when the games launch. Plus my firewall has a gaming mode in which it doesn't do anything when I'm gaming unless it really involves my attention.

I never had this problem with avast 4.

Only with avast 5...

Lesson learned!
