[Nifskope] Armor and light sources issue

Hi people !

I have a lil issue with a piece of gear I've matched with the main armor I like. The mix'n'match worked fine but in-game, let's say in front of a fire inside a tavern, while the parts of the original armor receive the light source (and so are clearly visible), the piece of armor I added gets like dark/black as if I was in the shadows.

I bet I've forgotten something in Nifskope, did anyone had similar issue?

Shadow glitch could be caused by a few reasons:

1: Transparency and shadow mask conflict, if you are using 4845, 4333 etc TR flags on the added piece of armor.

2: Normals got flipped on the piece you added.

3: Excessive bone weight influence on verts. Max bone weight per vert should be 4.

4. Setting texture shader flag to "double sided" when the mesh is actually double sided.

Well, those are the reasons I can think of on top of my head.

Hi man, I think it may be a bones issues. Not sure where exactly I have to make the changes, is it BSDismemberSkinInstance > Num Bones : 12 (I switch to 4) ?

Nono, Num bones refers to the number of skeletal nodes the armor piece uses, do not change that - not even sure if you can without re-rigging.

Max bone influence refers to the maximum number of skeletal nodes that can influence any given vertex, the default for 3ds is 20, but you should set it to 4 for Skyrim before export.

You can find it under "advanced settings" in the 3ds "Skin" modifier. Not sure about Blender.

However, after re-reading your initial post, the problem you describe (armor piece turns black when in front of a light source such as fire) seems more like an alpha transparency issue, if you use alpha map, or a vertex issue if you don't.

The bone issue affects the mesh under all lighting conditions.

You may be able to fix the bone issue in NIfskope with the Spells -> Batch.

Sorry guys I should have posted some pictures to show you the problem.. Silly me, here's 2 pictures, one where there's the weird shadow thing, the other where the armor looks fine.
