Need some help with a graphic card

Hej guys and girls

My old laptop graphic card has stopped working, so I am looking for a new pc and I found a couple I like.

My qustion is  which graphic card is the best. One has a AMD Radeon R9 290 4gb ram and the other a NIVIDA GTX970 4gb ram.

Dont know much about Radeon cards so hope some can help.

Tom's Hardware is my go-to website for rankings. Their GPU chart shows those two cards in the same tier 4. Do be aware that video card numbering makes little sense. For example, the GTX 690 is in tier 2, above the 970.

Often times you can just run a simple search string to find comparison reviews, especially since the graphics card market is so competitive.

amd radeon r9 290x vs nvidia gtx 970

They seem to be fairly close performance wise, but not in price, of those reviews I quickly browsed.

The 290x seems to generate a lot of heat, so extra cooling may be needed, unless of course you want to use it make grilled cheese too.  :P

After 15 years of using ATI/AMD cards I'm more than likely going to switch to Nvidia next. The graphics drivers (and Catalyst software) have been imo sub standard to the capabilities in other cards from other vendors, especially Nvidia. AMD has ample opportunity to improve on that and have not, but then it is a failing company.

Varenne right . and while gtx 970 require 500 watts & 30 Amps PSU, AMD 750 watts & 42 Amps PSU

so its really matter of cost.

but for my opinion i like the Nvidia one more :D

anguuhai - Yup, so would I.

As a side note I just checked and AMD has released a new beta for Catalyst and drivers for the Radeon series, aimed at Windows 7 and 8 users and high-end gamers. It still doesn't compel me to go with a higher priced (almost dble?) card.

I used to use the Omega drivers for my cards, but the author stopped making them due to RL time issues, which is sad as their drivers were drastically superior to what ATI/AMD was pumping out.

290X is not the fastest card, but currently has the best price/performance ratio. I'd say wait until at the end of June. AMD will release the 300 series on June 18th, which might mean a price drop for 200 series cards.
