Bite the bullet and run Skyrim in 720p.

That's what I had to do, when I was on GTX260 and then HD6870.

Also, you can reduce the resolution on some textures down to 1k or 512, and then remove the mipmaps(as they add to your VRAM load).

My hobo PC sucks (and kind of always has for reasons), I'm overdue a total refresh by about 2 years. I find the low 30s absolutely fine for general gameplay - I'd like more obvs, but I'm a mod junkie who needs to be in her happy place. So I aim for 35ish outdoors, 45 to 55 indoors.

I've tried all the alternatives to ENB over the years, they have their place but none of them gave me that yummy satisfaction that Somber, Saraan Suum or any of Bronze's ENBs do. I'm prepared to routinely throw 25 or 30fps under the bus for that.

I have never used an ENB and my rig packs a serious punch.   Seriously, with Purity (for water, weather and lighting) the Imaginator, Skyrim Flora Overhaul and some nice hi-res textures, why would I risk torching my game?  Heard too many horror stories about ENBs - and no, it's not because I'm too stupid to use them.   You really can get some wonderful scenes without.
