Anyone care to teach about BAIN installs?

Hello everyone.

I was just wondering if anyone would be interested in providing some tutorial or such on how to actually do BAIN installs. I've been reading alot on the wikis and bethesda's site, and it seems pretty difficult to actually do/set up. Does anyone here do this, and what are your success stories/lessons learned? I'd really like to learn how to do this, especially as my data folder is now in a condition that I would really benefit from a complete re-install, but the whole BAIN process seems daunting to say the least. Thanks for anyone replying to this and perhaps shedding some light on how to get started. I would REALLY appreciate any info on how to set up packages for Lovers with PK and related mods! Thanks for your time.

Happy gaming/modding! -Merctime

Well, having read through some of the pictorials over at the nexus, I have decided that this is really something I should learn. I think I'll be taking the BAIN installer plunge very soon, starting in the next few days. Really, folks... If you have any experiences with this, bad or good... I'd love to hear them, as I am sure this will not be simple and any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't see what BAIN has to offer than OMOD doesn't, other than the fact that its one less program to mess with.

I don't think obmm tracks the status of each file of a mod. With BAIN you can know that a given file is provided by several mods, and which one takes precedence. E.g. if you install uop then uop supplementals (which both ship the same esps), obmm won't display from which package the current esps come (it will show them as shipped by both packages).

A nice BAIN feature is that the package's icon reflects its status (iirc: red -> missing file, orange -> esp overwritten by another package, yellow -> resource file overwritten, green -> everything installed).

Besides, you can also set the "unpack" order for all BAIN packages, so if two packages provide the same esps or resources, the ones from the lower priority packages won't be used. Then, if you uninstall the higher priority package, the files from the lower priority package will be unpacked and restored (I think that's an option called "auto-anneal"). With obmm it's much more annoying to manage that...

But it's rather boring that many archives are available in an omod-ready format (and that many use scripts), but not bain-ready, so when you want to use only bain, you've got to check your packages and potentially repack several of them (to reproduce what the scripts do). It's especially annoying when the omod scripts alter some ini files... (maybe bain provides a way to do that, but I've not played anough with it).

I find it easier to manage the packages with bain, but ymmv. ;-)

Mrpouit, It seems you have some personal experience with BAINS. Would you mind giving a brief description on how you package files, and how you basically install a mod or two with BAIN? That would be awesome :D

Okay, I've put a few examples, hope they'll help (I put a copy/paste of the archives' structures in spoiler tags). But I guess there are better explanations elsewhere on the web...

  1. 2nd to 1st person

    2nd_to_1st_Person-4132.rar:

    2nd to 1st person.esp
    2nd to 1st person readme.txt

This is the simplest case, only one ESP, at the root of the archive. So you can simply drag & drop the archive into the left part of the installer tab. Then right click on the entry created, and in the drop-down menu, you can focus on a few things only: "Move to" -> handles the priority (mods with lower values will have their files overwritten in case of conflicts); and "Install"/"Install Last"/"Install Missing" -> installs the selected files/installs and overwrites every possible conflicting file/installs only files that don't exist already (you can see the corresponding info on the right part, Matched/Missing/Mismatched tabs).

  2. Dunmer fix from F-INev texture pack

    Dunmer_fix-19021.7z:

    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\F-IN evOblivion.txt
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\Textures
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\Textures\characters
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\Textures\characters\darkelf
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\Textures\characters\darkelf\female
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\Textures\characters\darkelf\female\footfemale.dds
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\Textures\characters\darkelf\female\footfemale_n.dds
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\Textures\characters\darkelf\female\handfemale.dds
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\Textures\characters\darkelf\female\HandFemale_n.dds
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\Textures\characters\darkelf\HeadDarkElf.dds
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\Textures\characters\darkelf\HeadDarkElf_n.dds
    DUNMERfix F-IN evOblivion\Textures\characters\darkelf\Thumbs.db

This time there's everything in a top directory, with the textures immediately in it. But it's the same, works fine in bain as well.

  3. Duke Patrick's Magic you can believe in

    Duke_Patricks_magic_you_can_believe_in_Rev_6-30635.7z:

    Data
    Data\textures
    Data\textures\magic
    Data\textures\magic\breakdamage.dds
    Data\textures\magic\breaksteam.dds
    Data\textures\magic\fly.dds
    Data\textures\magic\magicsymbols.dds
    Data\textures\magic\magicsymbolsReverse.dds
    Data\textures\magic\shockdamage.dds
    Data\textures\magic\smallstar.dds
    Data\textures\magic\strans.dds
Duke Patricks - Magic you can believe in.esp
Duke Patrick's magic you can believe in.txt

This one is bad, there's the ESP at the root, but also a "Data" folder (the esp should really be in there). If you import it in bain, the esp will be detected, but the resource files will be misdetected (check the "Skipped" tab, and you'll see them here because of the extra "Data\" path, and they'll be automatically ignored by bain...)
So you can repack it to put all files at the root of the archive, or the esp in "Data" as well.

    Duke_Patricks_magic_you_can_believe_in_Rev_6-30635-BAIN.7z:

Duke Patricks - Magic you can believe in.esp
Duke Patrick's magic you can believe in.txt
    textures
    textures\magic
    textures\magic\breakdamage.dds
    textures\magic\breaksteam.dds
    textures\magic\fly.dds
    textures\magic\magicsymbols.dds
    textures\magic\magicsymbolsReverse.dds
    textures\magic\shockdamage.dds
    textures\magic\smallstar.dds
    textures\magic\strans.dds

Like that, it'll work fine in bain.

  4. Get Wet

    Get Wet.esp
    Get Wet - just droplets.esp
    Get Wet - no droplets.esp
    Get Wet_readme.rtf
    omod conversion data\config
    omod conversion data\info.txt
    omod conversion data\script.txt
    textures\GetWet\getwet.dds

This is a simple package with several ESPs (omod conversion data are ignored), but you can't enable them all at the same time. So, before installing, look at the area called "Esp/m filter" on the right. All the ESP/Ms will be enabled by default, but I only want "Get Wet - just droplets.esp", so I'll uncheck the other two. Then, when you right-click+Install, bain will only install the selected ESP, and remember your selection.

  5. COBL

Cobl_172-21104.7z (too big, so I only paste the root folders' names):

    00 Cobl Core\
    01 Balanced Races\
    01 Salmo the Baker\
    01 TNR\
    02 Patches\
    03 Item Interchange\
    10 Modders Only\
    omod conversion data\

These folders are named so that they are recognized by bain as subpackages (""), and it's a bain-ready archive. They follow almost the same rules as packages (so you won't have "00 Cobl Core\Data\somesp.esp", nor "00 Cobl Core\Data\Meshes\somemeshes.nif", but "00 Cobl Core\somesp.esp" and "00 Cobl Core\Meshes\somemeshes.nif". They'll appear in the "Sub-packages" area, and when you check a package, all its content is added for installation. You can also combine that with the ESP/M filter, e.g. when you check "02 Patches" but don't use OOO, uncheck "OOO 1.32-Cobl.esp" in the filtering area.

You can also have wizards to present options to the user in a nice way (something like omod scripting). When the package contains a wizard, you'll see a "magic wand" on the package's icon, and you can right-click+Wizard to launch it (you can play with Really AEVWD's archive, it contains such a wizard).

  6. Bathing Mod

    Bathing_Mod-13275.7z:

    BathingMod_Base.esm
    BathingMod_Bathroom_Upgrades.esp
    BathingMod_Placeable_Bathtubs.esp
    BathingMod_readme.txt

For this one, the optional ESPs are in a folder ignored by bain, so it's a good example for subpackages when you repack it. The three extra folders can be made as subpackages: e.g. you move "extras\A Bloody Mess compatibility" to "01 Bloody Mess compatibility", "extras\bonus not penalty" to "02 bonus not penalty", and "extras\Shivering Isles" to "03 Shivering Isles", and see them when you import the package into bain.
E.g., the bain-friendly archive could be:

I learnt how to use Bain (and Wrye Bash) through this site.

A lot of good info on how to use, install and organise. Saved me a ton of hassle than with OBMM.

EDIT: Dude... That was a FANTASTIC write up! Thank you thank you thank you! That... Made sense... to a non-IT professional and non-techie such as myself. AWESOME tutorial!!! Exactly what I was hoping for, no nonsense "hey this is how to do it" kind of explaining. Wonderfully done!

I really appreciate both of you!! Thanks very much. I think I'll get started learning how to do this now....Happy gaming! -Merctime

Okay... so, I just upgraded my system a bit, and thought I'd give RAEVWD another shot. Well, seems I can't install it. It is BAIN-ready, but not OMOD-ready. Another party has made an OMOD installer, but it does not function with the latest RAEVWD (1.9.2). But it seems I can't used BAIN either, because Wrye Bash up and dies the instant it encounters a non-western folder name. I refuse to uninstall anything, as I have no idea 1) which folders have non-western subfolders, and 2) which mods those folders are associated with.

That established, is there some other non-official version of Wrye Bash - a Japanese version, perhaps - that will not die on asian folder/file names?

You need to have wxpython-unicode and not -ansi, and set "bEnableUnicode=True" in your bash.ini (if it doesn't exist, copy and rename bash_default.ini in the Mopy/ folder).

It's an experimental feature though (I don't have any non-ascii file/folder right now, so I didn't test it)...

Thanks mrpouit, very informative posts there. I did some installs via BAIN, but wasn't too sure about what I did exactly. It's clearer now.

I think BAIN doesn't have any kind of archiveinvalidation system, so you'll have to rely on OBMM for that.

BAIN has a script system like oBMM does (they call them wizards). I'm not too sure about the functionalities. The only wizard I run crashed the app, I think it was designed for a more recent version of Wrye Bash than the one I currently use.

Cool. I'll have to try it out when I get back from Otakon, thanks!

I think BAIN doesn't have any kind of archiveinvalidation system' date=' so you'll have to rely on OBMM for that.

You can't choose the type of invalidation you want like obmm, but it provides bsa redirection: to enable it, right click on the column header in the installer tab and check the option. I see many people recommending bsa alteration here, but bsa redirection always worked for me (and according to http://devnull.sweetdanger.net/archiveinvalidation.html it's the easiest one to manage).

BAIN has a script system like oBMM does (they call them wizards). I'm not too sure about the functionalities. The only wizard I run crashed the app' date=' I think it was designed for a more recent version of Wrye Bash than the one I currently use.

Yeah, it seems to be a bit less robust: here some worked fine (Really AEVWD, AMB), and others are more painful (AWLS 5.5.3's wizard.txt has a missing comma, so it doesn't work with wrye bash >= 292, and for AWLS 5.5.4, there's a "&" in a subpackage name, which the wizard doesn't like at all...) :/
