Kashiwaba Tomoe

rescaled worldmap discussion

Anyone else think that it'd be pretty neat to resize the entire oblivion worldmap, so Cyrodil actually feels large, not like something your horse can run across in a matter of minutes.

Yes, I know that realisticly speaking it would be next to impossible to actually manage, however no reason not to discuss it (if only because someone may actually come out with a good idea :P)

I remember reading a thread on the nexus forums discussing the world map. Someone was actually working on it I think. I can't find the thread though.

I would also like to see Cyrodiil resized. I found it ridiculous that in 30-60 minutes I could run from Anvil to Cheydinhal. Really broke the immersion for me.

note: I am very drunk, so read it twice if nessacary

To be fair, there were so many imersion breakers in oblivion that its almost unfair to bring up this one.

But yeah, it would be better if walking to ALL cities was the distance between TWO close citys.

Then add in 10+ villages too.

I think the Dynamic Map by TheNiceOne does pretty good job at rescaling the map. You can zoom in and out the map.

Well I was talking more of an actual redo of the world, to actually be to scale, than a map that dynamically updates for mods.

What would actually be, in my mind, one of the easier things to do would be to take the heightmap, and just use the editor to increase it's size by the desired factor, then edit locations as needed to fit the new scale.

I'd be a pain that takes time, but look real nice when done.

That and actually make 'roughing it' actually possible, as you'd be more than 5min from a city on a horse almost all the time.

That and it'd open up a lot more land for mods.

Right, You're drunk. Eat mineral rich food like pickles or canned fish or Prairie Oyster.

has it crossed your mind that that 5 minutes is several hours of in-game time example go to weynon priory wait till 5 am then run to kvatch it will take you a full game day if you run straight and more if you follow the roads in real world terms that's a good 80 miles just between kvatch and chorral so while it may only take 5-10 minutes of real time to go from anvil to cheydenhall then ingame distance you are traveling is the equivalient of 200 miles or more

Yes, it may be scaled, but that also leads to things looking even sillier because the place is so empty.

It's impossible & totally ridiculous to re-scale tamriel wilderness. The best thing a modder can do is create a completely new world like Nehrim or small lands like dibella watch and shivering isle.

Somebody actually did it--I saw it the other day.

Can I tell you where? No. I forget so I'll go look and see if I can find it.

Bye.

EDIT: Nope. I know it was in English so it wasn't some Russian site for example because I was reading all about it (unless it was put up on Nexus and the mods took it down--not picking on the mods this time), that it wasn't a map but the actual 'world' that you could walk across--but of course it was only mountains and flora and the major cites I believe.

I saw it--I know I did.

I believe you, I've seen similar mods before on the nexus, and they DO tend to vanish pretty fast.

Expanding the world is a great idea but I don't fast travel, ride a horse, or even run - so its already big enough for me. A better option is to have running kill your fatigue (causing exhaustion) and to disable fast travel and map markers. Tamriel suddenly gets a LOT bigger.

I don't have any mods installed to accomplish this. Wrye Bash killed the Map Markers for me, and I just walk everywhere. Its amazing how much there is to do and see when you just walk.

Like Triatna said, adding new worldspaces is the best route to take. Changing the physical size of the world would destroy just about every (land based) mod in existance.

I didn't mean this to sound harsh, btw... You CAN make the existing world bigger: Choose your mods carefully and commit to a certain style of play.

Yes, I don't use Fast Travel or teleportation. I also use Synchronized Date and Time so that if I stayed on it for 24 hours that's the exact time that would pass in the game.

And if you have to come back to a place in 3 days then 3 real days have to pass before you can go back.

I don't use that time/date sync mod (seen it tho) but I do usually adjust the timescale pretty close to realtime.

There's also a mod that (configed via .ini) adjusts the timescale depending on what you're doing, from combat, walking, running, sneaking, etc.

The main problem Ive found with that, just walking not fast traveling, there is so little TO find unless you avoid the roads and wander, I mean fuck Cyrodil has 8 large cities (nine if you counted the always-burning Kvatch ruins), 20+ easily (cant be botherd to count all of them) abandoned forts that just sit there acting as homes to critters and criminals, even strangely abandoned forts sitting right on the road.

As for small settlements and such, you have about 30 or so (vanilla) if you count cloud ruler, the priory, knight of the thorns lounge, etc, the majority of which have under 10 people in them. If I ahd my way, each major city would have 5-10 decent sized farming villages within their territory as well.

Personally, I feel the size of the game is about what the size of the area around lake rumare should have been like (IE: the area immediatly nearby the imperial city.

As for the comments of rescaling pretty much conflicting every location mod out there, well that's true and at this late point in the game the main drawback to the idea.

I was going to post this today but somebody beat me by two hours (or was it yesterday?) The point is I can't find their post so:

Cyrodiil Rebuild RUS http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/42085

It's in Russian but it populates the areas around the towns (can't use landscaping mods I believe.) Not bad.

OHHHH that looks nice.

Good thing I usually don't use landscape mods either.

O_o whoa.. i can imagine it'll conflict with a lot of mod. Especially armor mod chest locationz.

It's all outside the towns and around them--it is very nice and although it's in Russian I kept it.

I was really pleased when I couldn't get out of Skingrad without crashing so went around it and walked straight into what the mod did--very impressive.

Yeah, I love pretty much all mods that at least TRY to add life to cyrodil.

Of course vanilla cyrodil is so fucking dead, a kid pissing on the keyboard would add life to the game.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Bethesda starts the games and then says to the modders 'Okay--you finish it.'

Yeah, it's like FO3 was just a REALLY big total conversion of oblivion, with tons of audio and voice to bloat the file size.
