[QUESTION] Any fix for the infamous "black screen" problem?

Hey guys, I recently encountered the "black screen" problem. It's not the type where the screen flickers black. Instead, it's the one where after saving in a room or cell, and then loading from that save, everything you see is black with the exception of the HUD (or when you open up the menu by hitting the Tab key). To better illustrate what I'm talking about, it's basically like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvUJ-kzQSsk

Thing is, their "fix" isn't really a fix; it's more like a workaround that I refuse to follow. I mean, play the game in medium settings? Come on... I have an ATI Radeon HD 6970. I would do that video card, Oblivion, and myself a great disservice if I play the game on medium settings while all things considered. No, I would rather play this game with all visual settings maxed out, even if I have to lose some performance, but at least without any game-breaking flaws like this black screen issue I'm having.

One suggestion was to enable 3.0 Shaders for Oblivion, but that didn't work. There's also the "Chuck Patch" but I'm afraid to use it for the simple reason that it's a patch several years old. I doubt it would work anymore considering all the updates that both Oblivion and ATI have had over the years.

So if anyone knows how to fix this, I'd appreciate it. :)

if you have wreybash there should be an option for fixing the blackscreen bug, but you have to apply this to every mod in your list.

This bug only happens on Nvidia cards.

I'm glad Donkey verified what I was thinking. I had read a long time ago that this bug was only nvidia cards and only up to a certain series at that.

Also, I dont think the work-around for this bug is meaning you have to play the game at medium settings. Its my guess that you would just have to set it to medium, get the environment back save (ideally in a different location) then re-adjust back to max settings. That's just my take on it although I'm curious as to what exactly happened with your ATi card.

That's what I thought too. But ironically enough, I didn't encounter this problem when I had my old nVidia GTX 285. Granted, I was only able to force AA it on 4x but with that plus HDR ingame I never encountered this problem. But I am facing it now with my ATI Radeon HD 6970 (which is a bit of an upgrade over the old nVidia card of mine). To think I'm experiencing this on an ATI card rather than an nVidia card (since it's well-documented for this brand) does confuse me.

Yeah, I tried that it works but it's a temporary fix. Everytime I save at a different spot (almost always if in a room or interior cell of some sort) I experience the problem. So I have to do the workaround once again. It becomes a hassle to the point that I'm now desperate for a solid, permanent solution.

I should specify that I only experience this problem if I crank up my Catalyst settings all the way up. However, if I just put it to "Enhance application setting" mode with 2xEQ AA and with low Anisotropic Filtering settings, I don't see the black screen problem. But of course, the AA isn't as good as opposed to true 8xEQ or even 24xEQ; I might as well just use OBGE's NormalFilterAA shader...

If you're using (OBGE) Screen Effect' date=' try activating the "Matrix of perception" and reset it.

( a fix exist if that's the problem http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=26787 )

I do use OBGEv2, but I currently have it disabled. At one point, I even removed it completely as a test but to no avail.

Here's the interesting (and ironic) part about all this. If I use OBGEv2 and leave my Catalyst settings to default, I can use as much shaders as I want via OBGE mod and my game neither crashes nor experiences the black screen issue. This leads me to believe that it's not a hardware problem that I'm experiencing but rather software. Most likely it's drivers or perhaps some setting/bug that I need to look into.

Wish I had more info for you, I have never had the issue myself. I always run nvidia cards as a personal preference. (The 1 ATi card I bought a few years back was their flagship and after installing the card and booting up it literally burst in to flames inside my system.) Never had another ATi card and never sold another in any of the custom systems I build.
